Anesthesia Options

Oral surgeons have to receive many years of education and training beyond dental school to practice the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. During this time, they also receive training in the safe administration of anesthesia. As an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Martin ensures his patients receive safe, comfortable, and compassionate care during every step of their treatment.

Types of Anesthesia

The type of anesthesia that is right for your oral surgery procedure will be determined by your oral surgeon in advance of your procedure. This usually takes place during your first visit to our office. When selecting the best anesthesia option, the factors that are taken into consideration including the type of surgery, health history, and personal preference.

  • Local anesthesia is local to the surgical site and provides numbness to the area. Other types of anesthesia, such as nitrous oxide, are commonly used with local anesthesia.
  • Nitrous oxide/oral sedation helps patients to feel more relaxed during their procedure. Nitrous oxide is a sedative that is inhaled through a mask. Also known as laughing gas, it is commonly used with local anesthesia. Oral sedation involves taking medications orally that will also help patients feel more relaxed.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation is a very common anesthetic option for wisdom teeth and dental implant patients. The sedative is administered into a vein, which allows the patient to enter a sleep-like state quickly. Since one of the most common side effects of IV sedation is amnesia, most patients do not remember their procedure if they receive this type of anesthesia.
  • Hospital or Surgery Center-Based General Anesthesia is intended for oral surgery procedures that are extensive or complex in nature. The patient remains unconscious throughout the procedure.
