Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery may be recommended if your jaws are improperly aligned or you suffer from problems that cannot be corrected through orthodontics.

Jaw misalignment or other abnormalities can have a negative impact on the function of the jaw, such as chewing, speaking, and breathing. In addition, poor jaw alignment can cause other complications, such as TMJ disorders, sleep apnea, orthodontic and bone structure issues. Commonly known as jaw surgery, orthognathic surgery is usually recommended for patients with jaw misalignment when more conservative treatments fail.

Dr. Martin is a highly qualified oral surgeon who understands the complex structures of the head, neck, jaws, and mouth and can optimize the jaw’s function while restoring balance to the face.

Who needs orthognathic surgery?

In general, orthognathic surgery involves correcting the bite and function of the jaw, although it can treat many conditions. You may be a candidate for orthognathic surgery if noninvasive treatments have failed and you are experiencing one or more of the following:

We encourage you to seek a complete oral examination from a dental health professional, like an oral surgeon, if you are experiencing any of the symptoms above. Many issues related to mild to moderate jaw misalignment can be corrected or improved with nonsurgical treatments.

Orthognathic Surgery Procedure

The first step is to meet with an experienced oral surgeon, such as Dr. Martin, who will evaluate your condition, review and order any diagnostic scans, and discuss his surgical treatment plans with you. This first visit with Dr. Martin is an ideal time to ask any questions you may have about your upcoming procedure. We will also provide pre- and post-operative instructions to ensure you experience the best possible outcome.

To ensure you are safe and comfortable as possible, your surgical procedure will begin with the administration of anesthesia. Once you are completely at ease, your oral surgeon can begin the surgical treatment that was discussed during your consultation. In general, orthognathic surgery requires a portion of the jaw to be repositioned using screws, wires, and plates.

Once the surgery is complete, it will take several weeks for the bones to heal in their new positions. Following surgery, some swelling and discomfort are normal and to be expected; medications will be prescribed to manage any pain. While your jaw bones heal, an all-liquid or soft foods diet will be recommended. You can reduce your risk of complications and promote optimal healing by following all post-operative guidelines as given to you by your oral surgeon.
